By Asst. Chief Danny Beauvais
April 2, 2014

Troutman & Shepherds were alerted to I-77 NB around the 44mm for a reported MVA with injuries reported head on collision with one possibly entrapped. Moments later Troutman Engine 1 & Chief 515 (Beauvais) were responding. During response ECOM advised units they were receiving multiple calls on same and that ISCO & NCSHP were on scene. Troutman Engine 1 & Chief 515 were met with heavy traffic conditions and arrived on location and found 2 pickup trucks with heavy front end damage and began assessing the scene with Chief 100 (A.Church) establishing 77 command. After investigating personnel were faced with 2 patients who had self extricated themselves and an abundance of chlorine tablets that had broken apart and were scattered throughout the scene. After assessing one pt Med-Center Air was requested to the scene. Troutman 197 (E.Pendergrass) OIC of Engine 1 also requested Mooresville Fire's Hazmat team to the scene for assistance with the spill of the tablets. 2 ALS units & 1 supervisor arrived on location and began assisting with pt care. After further assessment of pt # 2 a 2nd helo was requested from Med-Center Air. Upon arrival of Mooresville Battalion 1 (R.Colvert) and Mooresville haz-mat units they too investigated there plan of action for the chlorine. Battalion 1 requested 2 large tankers from both Troutman & Shepherds to wash down the area with enough water to dilute the product. Troutman Tanker 1 & Shepherds Engine 3 both combined (4000 gallons) arrived on location and went to work. After washing down the area Haz-mat crews tested the water before clearing to make sure no other hazards would come about from the incident.

**Note: Witnesses stated that the pickup traveling southbound went off the interstate up the embankment cleared the guardrail went air-borne head-on into the other pickup traveling northbound on 77.**
