January 22, 2014

@ 03:40 Shepherds along with Lake Norman, South Iredell & Davidson FD's were alerted to assist Mount Mourne on a possible house fire around the 100 block of Winedale Rd. ECOM advised units responding that the caller stated the living room was on fire in the residence. Mount Mourne Engine 1 arrived on location minutes after and confirmed a working fire. 5 minutes later command advised ECOM to punch out Mooresville Engine 3 to assist with manpower to the scene to assist with suppression. (Now i'm going to take a brief pause in this news update to explain how most REAL VOLUNTEER departments operate: Shepherds is an all Volunteer Fire Department that is supplemented with a daytime staff (2 at each station) from Mon-Fri from 7am-6pm with half of those staff members being Volunteers as well. We do this due to the nature that during business/daylight hours most of our volunteers are out working at their respective jobs/careers in order to provide food on the table for each individuals families. Shepherds does have a contract with the Town Of Mooresville Fire Department which has Mooresville Engine's 2 & 4 running automatic aid in Shepherds FIRST due areas on any call with the exception of mutual aid calls in the county unless specifically requested by said Department. Due to the time frame of when Mount Mourne's structure fire was dispatched Shepherds had a total of 7 members (5 @ Sta 1 & 2 @ Sta 2) that showed up at both stations but a checked off driver was not readily available. Now most Departments might not want to reveal a situation like this but Shepherds has nothing to hide from it's community members or followers on this site. (Back to the story) Shepherds responded Brush 1 with 3 personnel, Car 51 with 2 personnel and Utility 2 (from sta 2) with 2 personnel. At the scene there was plenty of fire apparatus and water was not an issue as personnel on scene laid in from a nearby hydrant for an adequate water supply. Upon arrival of Shepherds personnel assisted with various duties such as grabbing another handline for suppression, search & overhaul. Mooresville Battalion 1 (K.Robinson) who also responded on the run added Mooresville Engine 5 for further manpower. A control time was issued within an hour as personnel began an extensive overhaul operation. Shepherds personnel were cleared @ 06:50hrs.
